Exploring the ancient woodlands and their features and changing flora and fauna. A great way to get fresh air and exercise, make new friends and enjoy the wonderful landscape on our doorstep. Ten weeks of walks exploring the woodlands of Epping Forest, the objective being to familiarise members with this ancient forest and some of its immediate countryside setting. We will consider its changing flora and fauna, some of its history and visit some of its historical features, such as Loughton Camp which dates from the Iron Age. We will also discuss the management of the forest and the way the Conservators, the City of London Corporation, try to preserve its historic and natural features while discharging their responsibilities to maintain it as a freely accessible open space available for public recreation. Walking will be for approximately two hours at a medium pace. We will meet at different locations in and around the Epping Forest area. The intention would be to walk even if the weather is a little wet, so suitable clothing and footwear should be available. If on any day the weather is seriously bad we would propose to have a talk with slides at Bedford House. When in doubt about whether to go to the walk venue or to Bedford House, members should telephone the office on 020 8504 6668. Participants will be notified of the first meeting point during enrolment. If you have no personal transport alternative arrangements could probably be made. |
