Drawing Experimentally

These classes will cover all aspects of drawing, from re-examining basic skills to discovering experimental and advanced methods, encouraging students to find their own form of expressive drawing.

Introduction - What is drawing? The way artists draw (looking at past Masters);

Learning to see - Different ways of interpreting what we see.

Drawing Materials - Basic and unusual drawing tools.

Perspective and Composition - Relating to figuration and abstraction.

Action and Automatic Drawing - Movement and Expression.

Tonal Drawings - Create volume and light using rags and rubbers; crosshatching.

Line Drawings - Experiment with crosshatching, drawing blind, other-handed and two handed drawings and drawing from blots.

Transfer drawings - Frottage and rubbings.

Chiaroscuro - Light out of dark.

Monotypes - Different ways with wet and dry papers.

Mixed Media - Combining monotype, pastels and other drawing methods.

Materials Needed:

Paper, at least A3 size
Pencils of different grades including one very soft (4B or softer) and hard (4H).
Charcoal
Pastels
Masking tape
Drawing ink and pen
Other drawing tools will be suggested as the course proceeds.
