Beginnning to Paint in Oil, Acrylic and Watercolour

Friday morning  10.00 to 12.30 Fee: £85.00

 Tutor: Anne Daniels

This class provides an introduction to painting. No previous experience is required.

The first term is divided into three-week blocks, each of which is devoted in turn to using watercolour, acrylic then oil paint. From actual experience of using the three painting media, class members identify the qualities of each medium and can then choose which to pursue according to their own preference.

In the second and third term, each class focuses on one aspect of making a painting.
An introduction is given to:

- choosing a composition using a viewfinder,
- making preliminary sketches,
- choosing a colour palette,
- seeing in line, tone/shade and colour,
- perspective/proportion.

A different subject, for example a still life, photographic image, or clothed model, is provided each week, though own subject matter is welcomed.

Essential materials are:

- A drawing medium - pencil (2B or softer) or charcoal or pastel,
-
Brushes - inexpensive to start with, but some suitable for watercolour and some suitable for acrylic/oil paint'
- An apron or overall,
- Masking tape to fix paper to drawing board,
- Paper - enough watercolour paper for three weeks and paper
suitable for acrylic/oilpaint for the rest of the term,

Basic paints - for the first term we use inexpensive student quality watercolours, acrylics and oils. (It is not advisable to buy expensive paint of many types until you have tried using them. For those without, basic colours are available for trial in class in the first term, after which you need to bring your own preferred paint.)

Palette or plate for mixing colours.
